Caddy’s World by Hilary McKay

Another must-read in Hilary McKay’s charming series about the eccentric Casson family, with its – literally – colorful family of artistic parents, Eve and Caddy's WorldBill, and their tremendously likable kids: Caddy, Saffron, Indigo and Rose. Just as Phyllis Reynolds Naylor took her beloved Alice back to her younger years, here McKay does the same, taking Caddy back to age twelve, and Rose back to her premature birth. It’s a credit to McKay’s masterful writing that she manages to wring humor alongside Rose’s life-and-death struggle. Knowing Rose will ultimately survive makes it easier on the reader, but takes nothing away from the very real emotions surrounding her perilous beginning. If, like me, you’re already a fan of this terrific series, you’ll especially enjoy this prequel. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of knowing the Cassons, this is the perfect place to start. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

That cover’s tremendous fun! I love it. The red and purple colours – all the details, and the washing line… I wonder who designed it. 🙂
